Fall Fail

at last the nights
are cold enough
to force the maples red
from
hiding

Irene's dry blow
browned
the windward
sides a month
too early

Brown and green
and little else
til mid October
finally
let a few cold nights escape
the warming blanket
of our new New England fall

The Harbor

Our charming harbor glistens in the distance

It's safety
relative

So unlike
it's deepwater
cousin across
the island
who shelters
tall ships
with room to spare

Our bay is sandy
our breakwaters
human scaled

Cape Ann 003

The just past full
moon
slid west
in a mackerel sky

On the opposite side
magenta bellied clouds
compressed the dawn
to two thin strips
of tangerine
and cream
on the eastern
sea

Soon the moon would drop
from sight
a brief 10 minutes of
full horizontal sun
would shine through
the narrowing slot
And then
grey and grey and grey
til dusk

when the moon broke through
in the eastern sky
and chased the
clouds

Cape Ann 001

I study the map

a body on
the autopsy
table

head
detached
but how?

what forces
wrest this island from
the shore it mirrors
shape
by
gap

pulled away
or
lured away

by Africa?
who headed
south
from here
for nigh the eon

or Iberia,
that chunky tail
of Europe
last seen
floating
eastward
somewhat
northward
somewhat

or perhaps
our
own volcanos

Quo bono

In New York
police protect
the bull

Both statue
and the
"greed is good"
philosophy
it represents

instead of
us

Brothers
in blue
you are
us

come into the love

and leave
the terror
to
the
mongors

Cape Ann 002

In the heating shed,
(outside…
a late addition
to a
former summer cottage)
a tiny soft brown mouse
runs skitter up
the top back pipe
and
turns it's large black liquid eyes my way
saying
either
close the freakin door, already
it's 9 degrees out there
or maybe
please don't kill me

hard to say
which one.
